Urgent warning not to enter Snowdonia lake after toxic algae found

The substance, called cyanobacteria, has been discovered at Llyn Tegid in Bala, Gwynedd, and can cause a number of health conditions

A warning has been issued for anyone visiting a popular lake near Snowdonia due to concerns over blue-green algae.

It has been discovered in Llyn Tegid, in Bala, Gwynedd, with the Snowdonia Park Authority (SPA) urging people to take great caution before getting into the water

In a statement posted to the SPA website, a spokesman said: "If there is algae or scum on the water, or if the water is not crystal clear DO NOT TOUCH THE ALGAE OR ENTER THE WATER.

"There is high risk of skin rashes, eye irritation, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and muscular or joint pain. Blue-green algae can be extremely harmful to animals therefore do not let pets drink or enter the water."
